Forgotten in Paradise - U.S. Virgin Islands Mental Health Community
This recently developed feature documentary film produced by award-winning filmmaker, Johanna Bermudez-Ruiz, chronicles the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands mental health service system.
The documentary sheds light on hundreds of Virgin Islanders who were sent off island in the 1940’s to St. Elizabeth Hospital, Washington D.C., for mental health treatment. It is a very heart-touching testimonial from people with mental illness, their families, and their struggle to have better mental health services.
“Forgotten In Paradise” is the first film to tell the omitted story of those living with mental illness in the American Caribbean. This documentary film is a production of Cane Bay Films, LLC and funded through USVI Disability Right Center.
